The Ballad of Trayvon Martin – In His Honor

My new Hoodie

My new Hoodie (Photo credit: bluedove935)

The man had a gun and a woody

The kid had tea, Skittles, and a hoodie

But the kid’s skin was brown

In a white part of town

He couldn’t’a been up to any good, could he?

It was All-Star week, NBA heaven

Half-time the kid shopped 7 -11

The rain came from the sky

The hoodie kept the kid dry

But his Skittles so look like a weapon

At least to this Zimmerman schmuck

Who divined that this child was a buck

Who of course had no right

To be out this time of night

Anywhere! – per this Zimmerman fuck

Who claims he shot in “self defense”

A claim which defies common sense

Since he was running like wild

After the child

Whose fear must have just been intense

This dumb rent-a-cop loony toon

Called this innocent kid “fucking coon”

Wrestled him down

On the cold and wet ground

And just one got up – this buffoon

This worth nothing bigoted hater

This wannabe cop emulator

Just took this child’s breath

Consigned him to death

On a whim – yet this foul perpetrator

Still hasn’t been brought to the dock

Still sits a free man with his Glock

While a whole nation mourns

And the Martins are torn

By a loss that has left them in shock

Were it my son I just might be bound

To buy me a gun and some rounds

Get a Florida Permit

Hunt down this piece of shit

Cap his head twice and claim “stand your ground”

And the Koch Bro’s backed NRA gun laws

Say the right to “concealed carry” is all yours

‘Cause Trayvon or his “bros”

His “homies” or “hos”

Are bringin’ their Skittles to your door

And Geraldo Rivera the putz

And Hannity his Fox brother nut

Say “hoodies” are why

This child had to die

In this “accident” – ACCIDENT? WHUT???

We are about to debase

What justice we still have re race

If we don’t address this

If we don’t arrest this

Monster – we’re a fucking disgrace!

  1. Seems to me this is murder of an innocent man by perhaps, if I’m kind, a deranged nutter. I don’t understand why there is so much debate. OK, innocent until proven guilty, but shocking after the shocking “crime” is lack of arrest or retribution. Where does society go if there is no process of law to curtail these situations? Is there to be open season on anyone you don’t like ? Scary.

  4. Hell yeah, Tony. You got it so right.

This case makes me sick to my stomach, and the law that makes it possible renders anyone ‘different’ into a target. I was wearing a hoodie yesterday. Couldn’t do that if I was in Florida. Some gun toting asshole might get scared.

  5. Of all the commentary to be read of this, Tony, you capture the heart of it. Were it not something any of us had to write or read. Were there more who could not substitute their names into this piece, if not in deed, at least in thought.

    Thank you, Tony.

  6. So now Rivera says because Trayvon was wearing a hoodie, he gets himself killed. According to the ‘World of Geraldo,’ anyone wearing a hoodie, boy or girl, man or woman, does that mean they are essentially bad, because of that, and gives assholes like the wanna be cop, a license to kill? What’s scary about it, is the nut bags that watch Fox News, will get the okay now to go out and shoot people who are wearing hoodies. Guys like Rivera, Hannity and others, should have duct tape over their mouths, and never hear from them again. go on…

  9. I can’t imagine what his family is facing – TWO tragedies: the loss of their child and then such unspeakable injustice….your words convey anger for the “wannabe cop emulator” and yet your heart shows through. Well written, Tony.

    • Jesco, i read your terrific piece, and take your points. regarding civilian cases, i get the hubris, but i am not sure that it’s boredom as much as it is filling an existential emptiness i.e.; “i exist…i matter…and i will prove i exist, and matter. hmmm…how? i’ll do something newsworthy” (this, probably on a somewhat unconscious level), and then we have our answers in all these shootings, from Columbine, to this… in Sgt Bales case, or in any soldiers case, in any nation’s army, we arm a man, make him a killer, put him under unreasonable stress, and then we are surprised that he runs amok shooting people. i think we both agree on this problem being a societal one. and as long as we think war is a solution, and we have the Koch Bros funding the NRA, and the flag waving hypocrite politicians who benefit by their backing – and to whom they owe their vote, and the upright white citizenry who are propagandized to paranoia re “immigrants”- or anyone slightly different, be they black, tan, yellow, indian, jew, russian, whatever – and who therefore need their guns to fight this perceived “threat”, we will continue to read these same headlines over and over again. having said all that, i think everyone should read your well thought out piece, and I thank you kindly for the comment – and the props. continue…

      • thanks for reading. i think most of what you just said was in there, that’s why i spoke about the self expression filling that emptyness, though its only possible through individuality instead of culture melt. i enjoyed reading your thoughts. i’m not specifically aware of NRA’s intentions and thanks your comment i will investigate. your poetry is angry and filled with hate, though its very pretty, just ensure we don’t let that Zimmerman deficiencies spread. Like i’m not sure he said “coon” to the poor kid. that just gets those groups riled man. but your skills are powerful. power to the people. curious about the “continue…”, i must say…

      • Jesco, no, it is not proof, but here’s the recording, he whispers to himself “fucking coons” at 2:21…

        http://rollingout.com/culture/goerge-zimmerman-used-racial-slur-in-911-callrecordings-appear-to-reveal/2/

as far as whether he is a racist or not, i agree – it is somewhat besides the point of this heinous crime. like most of us you are concerned “with preventing it again” if so, i don’t understand the sentence “My call is too ignore the bully with reverential silence.” as far as my poetry being filled with “hate”, if i “hate” bigoted ignorance – guilty, if i “hate” wealth bought injustice -guilty, if i “hate” apathy – guilty, if i “hate” preying on the less fortunate among us – guilty…if i “hate” self-righteous hypocrites – guilty. guilty on all counts. thanks for the comment. continue…

    • Jesco, the coon reference is from the transcript of Zimmerman’s taped conversation with the dispatcher who told him to “stop following” here is a portion of the 911 call transcript:

      Zimmerman: Shit, he’s running!
911 Operator: He’s running? Which way is he running?

[sounds of Zimmerman’s labored breathing and car door sounds]

Zimmerman: Down towards the, uh, other entrance of the neighborhood.
911 Operator: Okay, which entrance is that that he’s heading towards?
      Zimmerman: The back entrance.

      [sounds of Zimmerman’s labored breathing]

      Zimmerman: Fucking coons.
911 Operator: Are you following him?
      Zimmerman: Yeah.
911 Operator: Okay, we don’t need you to do that.
      Zimmerman: Okay.

      this is from: http://axiomamnesia.com/2012/03/20/george-zimmerman-calls-trayvon-martin-fcking-coon-911-call-audio/

and yes, the Koch Brothers fund the NRA. Just google it. thanks man, and thanks for the sub. continue…

      • c’mon man, I just came from that web site and it is not sourced or even slightly legitimate. It doesn’t matter even if that non sourced or first sourced article is right. Have you ever let a racial slur slip? If so you are proof that saying something racist makes you a killer. Furthermore I am concerned not if the killer who shot him was a racist, I am more concerned with preventing it again by neglecting to point the obvious finger at race. My call is too ignore the bully with reverential silence. continue…

  13. Tony,
while I usually find such humor in your ballads and songs this could only make my heart -and mind- ache. So witty yet such pathos.
    And the situation so horrendous.
Your piece is wonderful my friend, Tears come to my eyes, and maybe what hurts the most is that the people who should be made aware of this continuing situation could not care less about learning anything new.
Even if presented in such a wonderful, meaningful and clean way, as you always do.
    Be well.

  16. I rarely listen to the radio in my car but for some reason(not sure why, or maybe I do) this morning I did.. I heard the police tapes of when the “shooter” was chasing this young man and the Police told, not asked, told him twice not to pursue him anymore. He did not listen and now a young man is dead..senseless murder..the world is going mad..

    thank you for writing this..
