Barking in the Dark has just learned from a well place source inside the Obama inner circle what we can expect The President to say in the next debate. To paraphrase, it will go something like this:
My fellow Americans, before I answer Ms. Crowley’s first question I’d like to clear something up. Most of my supporters out there were left wondering why in the first debate with Governor Romney I let him go on distorting his positions in such a cavalier way without really trying to challenge him on what he was saying. So I’d like to take this opportunity to explain to you all my actions, or rather lack of actions, at that time.
Like many of you, when I was a youngster coming up, one of my heroes was the great heavyweight boxing champion of the world Muhammad Ali. Whether you agreed with his positions or not, Ali stood firm on his principals. Yes, I can hear all the conservatives out there saying “ooh, Ali a draft dodger”… a Muslim…ooh, Obama worshiped Muhammad Ali.” Republicans seem to have one great talent – they know how to name call – I guess they have nothing else. Anyway, Ali conscientiously objected to go over to Viet Nam and fight people he said he had no grievance against. And whether you think he was right or wrong in this, he stood firm in his convictions, gave up his title at the peak of his ability and lost three years from his career, before The Supreme Court exonerated him. He is a hero of mine because he is a man of principals.
In the ring Ali from time to time would languish on the ropes and let his opponent punch him for an entire round while he merely held his gloves up and absorbed the punches. He did this for a few reasons: One, he wanted his opponent to punch himself out, two, he wanted his opponent to see that he was indestructible and couldn’t be hurt by him, thus taking the opponent’s heart out of him, and three, he knew that after his opponent tired himself out he would be easy to knock out. He called this tactic “rope-a-dope.”
My friends, I wanted you all to see and hear for yourself – uninterrupted by me – my opponent’s blatant lies. I wanted you to see that this is a man who will smile at you, look you straight in the eye, and tell you one bald-faced lie after another. I wanted you to see a person who will say anything, and do anything, irregardless of morality and fact, just to get himself elected to the highest office of the land – whether it was good for the country or not. I wanted you all to see a person who has the unmitigated gall to think that he could somehow command the trust and respect of a nation, and the world, even as he stood in front of you, looked straight into your eyes, and lied about his position on every single issue of the utmost importance to our well being as citizens of this great nation. I wanted all of us – and the entire free world as well – to see what we would all be getting if we were to elect this person as our President, our representative to the world – a man to whom lying comes easily – a man without principals.
This cynical display by Mr. Romney should further reinforce his utter disregard – and complete disdain – for the 47% of the electorate he has so blatantly insulted.
Do you want this kind of a person as your leader?
Governor Romney, be on notice – In the words of the great Muhammad Ali, I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee….you’ve taken your wild swings and the time has now come for you to be knocked out. I will now set the record straight on anything coming out of your mouth that flies in the face of what you’ve campaigned on for the last year. And I suggest that everyone watching this google Governor Romney’s claims as to his positions on the issues and refute them along with me. And if the Governor can somehow manage the truth about what he really would like to do regarding health care, regarding the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, regarding energy, regarding your Social Security, regarding Roe v. Wade… why I might not even have to throw a punch at all.
As I said, the one thing Republicans know how to do is name call…so tomorrow we can all rest assured they will take time out of their ongoing efforts to re-distribute into their own pockets what little wealth that we in the middle class have left in order to beat the drums and dog whistle about the “angry black man” on stage last night. You can bet on it. And you can also bet that I am angry…very angry, as you all should be, that such an out-of-touch, unashamed, unapologetic liar as Mr. Romney here has the nerve to want to be elected to the office of President of these United States.
Now Ms. Crowley – I shall gladly answer your first question.
With acknowledgement to the great Randi Rhodes, who mentioned “rope-a-dope” in this context yesterday on her radio show.

Yes, you put into words what has been percolating in my mind ever since the debate–although I can’t say it made me happy to see him let the lying Mitt Romney get off with one after the other. But as another friend of mine said after the debate: Obama was playing chess and Romney didn’t know it. 🙂
