AN OPEN LETTER TO MILLENNIALS – SOME OF WHOM APPEAR TO BE NOT THAT BRIGHT…

…And whose vote for Gary Johnson could possibly get Donald J. Trump elected to the Presidency of this country.

Johnson, a man who had never heard of Aleppo – he said he thought it was “an acronym” – and who couldn’t name a single world leader he admired, oh, wait – he did manage to sputter; “The former president of Mexico,” he said, “I’m having a brain freeze,” is also a member of a party that advocates eliminating public schools in favor of private education or home schooling, abolishing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, elimination of virtually all kinds of environmental regulation, from governing air pollution and global warming to guarding against dangerous chemicals in drinking water and then leave it to corporate polluters, land owners and environmentalists to slug out their differences in court, and, pulling back from NATO and other global alliances and ending military and economic aid to Israel and scores of other U.S. allies. That Libertarian Party!

Had enough? And yet these millennials who spend untold hours taking selfies and staring trance-like into their smartphones, which are plainly far smarter than they are, and who, therefore are bombarded by information all day and night, have managed to either be blissfully unaware of any of this, or just don’t give a shit – and, you know, anything but (gasp) Hillary – because they are dumb enough to believe the constant Republican smear machine. Oh – and they obviously like the sound of the word “Libertarian” because hey, it sounds just like liberty, and liberty is great duh – ain’t it?

The fact that for 35 years Hillary Clinton has worked tirelessly for children, families, the poor and disadvantaged, and who has been an effective Senator and America’s Secretary of State doesn’t seem to impress these people. Nor does the fact that their wasted vote might put Donald Trump in the White House seem to matter to them.

I am talking about the Millennials who cannot connect the dots. Who cannot read, write, add, or spell because the computers they are chained to do it all for them at the press of a button. Who say that they just can’t seem to decide who to vote for this November between the two main candidates – and, who therefore will waste their vote on Gary Johnson, who has less than zero chance of winning but has a great chance of putting Donald J. Trump in the oval office.

The Millennials who cannot see the clear choice between a woman who has dealt with foreign leaders all over the globe, who has successfully worked across the aisle in The Senate, a woman who has been in the war room while crucial decisions have been deliberated, or a man who is being sued by thousands of people for fraud, and who is a proven serial liar, a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, infantile, insulting, amoral, thin-skinned narcissistic con man.

And, after their vote for Mr. Johnson puts this fraud Trump into our White House and he packs the Supreme Court with Right-wing ideologue judges who will rule the court for the next three decades or more, what will they tell their female children and grandchildren who will have lost the right to their own reproductive choice, and what will they tell all their children when the mass shootings get worse due to all the guns still on the street?

And, what will you Millennials tell your children and grandchildren when an education becomes impossible to attain – unless one is very, very well off? When Social Security is privatized? When the plan to give them access to affordable healthcare is gone? When the immigration law that Trump has suggested, has cost the federal government from $400 billion to $600 billion and shrunk the labor force by 11 million workers and your children can’t find work – will you tell them that your vote made all this a reality?

And what will you tell them when our independent press is silenced – because Donald Trump has vowed to constrict the independent press. Will you admit that it was your vote that helped bring this first step to fascism about?

You Millennials need to seriously re-think your desire to cast your ballot for Gary Johnson – or Jill Stein, who I admire and, who in another time, a time without a monster in the race with a chance to use siphoned votes to win an election is not running. But, in this time there is such a monster in the race and no vote can be wasted – conscience or no conscience.

It is no secret that I do not like Republicans in general, but there would be no pressing need for me to write this piece were the Republican candidate in this race any regular garden variety Republican. However, this candidate is a man completely devoid of morals. A man so unfit for the office as to make its nightmarish possibility surreal. A carnival barker who stands one step away from the nuclear codes. Surely, this must be a Kafkaesque charade playing out before our very suddenly wide opened eyes.

We beseech you undecided Millennials to at the very least google Gary Johnson and the platform of The Libertarian Party and read for yourself what this man and The Libertarian Party advocates. Our country’s future could be in your hands. Don’t make a mistake you will never ever be able to rationalize to your children.

  1. At this point I don’t much care what Hillary has done. She’s the only one with a realistic chance of beating Donald Trump. And he absolutely MUST BE DEFEATED. We dare not give the nuclear codes (and a host of lesser powers) to the man you’ve described so well.

  2. At the Democratic Party convention, there was this young Bernie supporter who was asked if she’d vote for HC now that BS has endorsed Hillary. This girl said No, she won’t and the Democratic Party is sooooooo unfair because they made Sanders the last speaker at the convention. My jaw dropped. I’m a Millenial myself and I know the last speaker is the VIP. If this girl doesn’t even know this simple fact, what else doesn’t she know ? To think she was an accredited Convention rep of Sanders.

  3. What exactly has HClinton done to work tirelessly for women and children? Besides writing a book no one has read?

  4. I’m not sure that speaking in such a patronizing and contemptuous tone to Millenials will persuade them to listen to or heed your arguments. I understand your frustration, and I agree with your points and intention. If this were directed at me (and I’m waaayyyy too ancient to be a Millenial), I’d flip you the bird and get on with my life. Just sayin’ 😉 xoM

    • M. the thing is; i do not expect a single one of them to read what i wrote…i wrote it because it’s the way i feel about anyone who would vote for a party whose platform is so against our safety net and the New Deal. Granted, i agree with the Libertarian stance against our affinity for wars. but that is where it begins and ends…i stand by what i wrote and if it is read carefully one understands that my attack is on those Millennials who are voting for Gary Johnson and who i am certain haven’t a clue as to what the Libertarian Party stands for. And, believe me (as Trump brays) this piece could have been much more vitriolic. i am outraged that their unthinking, unaware, 15% could put this criminally stupid phony in the White House and thus put more right-wing ideologues on the Supreme Court. the time for being polite is long past…we are dealing with a monster. thanks for your comment. continue…

      • I understand your rage and your blog is an excellent vehicle to express it.

I also agree with you on the points you make. Here’s mine: the Millenials will be around for some time yet, they are in the ascension whereas I am on my way out of this Life cycle. While it’s true I won’t be around for the mishegoss they’re creating, I’m still here now and I feel that treating everyone with respect rather than dumping them into a garbage heap is, ultimately, a more productive approach.

That said, this is still a free country where we are able to exercise choice. Let’s keep it that way! 😉 xoM

      • Margarita, would you have treated the Nazi youth who stood and cheered Hitler with respect? yes, i equate what is happening here and now with what happened in Germany in the 30’s. Hitler rose to power on the backs of the ignorant. i am sorry, but while i respect you i cannot respect the uninformed millennials who might give us a President Donald J. Trump. thanx, continue…

      • Yes. I would have treated them with respect, as I treat millenials with respect. I do what I can to inform and educate them. Ultimately, I only have control over my actions and my decisions and I exercise that control mindfully and consistently. I do not have control over anyone else’s actions, thoughts, opinions, willingness to learn or remain ignorant. I cannot make anyone other than myself live up to my ideas and ideals. So while I offer my thoughts and opinions respectfully, I also acknowledge that everyone has the right to pay me no mind. However, by doing so respectfully, there is the microscopic chance that someone might be moved to listen and attempt to dispel the darkness of ignorance enveloping them.Vitriol doesn’t help. That has been my experience.

I strongly feel that it’s time to stop feeding the self-indulgent, ignorant organism that is the Republican candidate for President of this country, and start focusing more on the things that we have to be grateful for, that are already working, and that can use intelligent fine-tuning to improve. I don’t want to wallow in the muck that individual is spewing. I’m staying away from the trajectory of his metaphoric vomit, keeping myself, and as many as I can reach, clean, and ready to do what needs to be done to move forward.

Our difference appears to be one of style rather than substance. Whew! 😉 xoM
