THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE MUST GO!

Something is terribly wrong when a candidate for President wins the popular vote – but loses the election.

For the fifth time in our history this miscarriage of justice, this slap in the face of we, the people, has occurred. And we, the Democrats, have now won the popular vote and lost the Electoral College in two of the past five elections.

The Electoral College was a fine method for electing a president – in 1790, when life was far more local and information took far more time to travel across a vast continent. That was then, but this is now. This now archaic system distorts the one-person, one-vote principle of democracy because electoral votes are not distributed according to population, thus an individual citizen in Wyoming has more than triple the weight in electoral votes as an individual in California. There is so much wrong with this system and I invite you to check out these problems for yourself at: https://www.minnpost.com/eric-black-ink/2012/10/10-reasons-why-electoral-college-problem

And, when you hear that “the people have spoken,” a phrase uttered yesterday even by President Obama, more precisely the people have not spoken – the 538 members of the Electoral College have spoken!

Please sign this petition below to abolish this unfair system of electing our President and Vice-President – and pass it on to your friends.

  2. I heard a stat today which was the Republicans have only won 1 popular vote out of the last 7 elections:

    Dems: Clinton ’92, ’96/ Gore ’00/
    Obama ’08, ’12/Clinton ’16

    GOP: Bush Jr. ’04

The GOP does not want the Electoral college changed any more than Trump wants the “rigged system” changed. What salt in the wounds that for months it was “rigged, they’re cheats, gonna get ripped off” from Trump but in the end it was us who were bent over and cornholed from here to Sunday.

I signed the petition, it as a symbolic gesture. Much like carrying on this week not in a depressed haze has been. I refuse to give up but it’s hard when reminded of Trumps tweets in 2012 slamming the Electoral college (which made zero sense since Obama won the popular & electoral votes handily but he was right), and the hypocrisy of GOP slamming Trump protesters when YOU KNOW if he lost, especially while winning the popular vote, they’d lose their ever loving minds. Race riots. It’s too much horseshit & hypocrisy to bear at times…

I will remain, I’ll continue… as you brilliantly put it Tony, but goddamn it we on the left need to sincerely appeal to everyone and when GOP Middle class whites are being sold a bill of goods we must do everything to show them that their interests mean shit in the GOP halls of power. Get past their emotions and bigotry and appeal to their interest on the thing that matters most in the United States, which is sad to say… money.

Lastly, I voted Sanders in my NV primary. I admit to smoking the hopeium and getting on the Hillary campaign 100%. What’s done is done but I hope we learn that when we have a fire brand like Bernie and the other choice is an established candidate or Washington insider, Democrat or not, we need to think in brutally honest terms, “Ho does the right see our candidate?!” We all knew they despised Hillary…they chanted “Lock Her Up” at rallies for fucks sake. Bernie would have defeated Trump in my view because enough Rust Belt whites who voted Trump in de facto protest would have coalesced behind Bernie with plain spoken, pro middle class message. As much as I can’t fathom how one can look at a mulitibillionaire in Trump and feel he “gets” the middle class, I can’t deny it isn’t too much better when a multimillionaire in Hillary says it either. From Sanders, not a millionaire, a man who has credit card debt, like all of us, the “I hear you middle class” message just rang truer.

While I don’t regret my actions or my decisions this election, I will learn from this. I tried to tell BernieOrBusts to pull together, to rally behind Hillary but met serious resistance. My Twitter is full of battles back & forth with Bernie supporters who would NOT be swayed and wanted it to burn down first than to back Hillary. I let the DNC email story sit in my gut, bothering me deeply, but rationalized it as “It’s her turn, we’ve known that since 2009”. I wonder what would have happened if the story broke earlier, not already as the convention was underway. Well wish in one hand, shit in the other right?

Bottom line: we can’t make mistakes like these again…

    Be cool, JS

  4. I thought I heard the word ‘mandate’ a couple days ago. And then ‘the people have spoken’. Really? An actual loss is a mandate? Thanks for pointing us toward that petition. I’ll be signing it when they finish ‘reviewing’ its content. It’ll take a constitutional amendment, and with a Republican congress it may not be possible yet, but it’s time for the president to be elected by the results of the actual vote.

  5. You might consider this petition, Tony,

    https://www.change.org/p/electoral-college-electors-electoral-college-make-hillary-clinton-president-on-december-19?recruiter=629077502&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink

It calls for the Electoral College to do the right thing now, on Dec. 19.

Can’t hurt, might help! 😉 xoM
